An investment in your home or business that actually pays for itself.

October 25, 2008 · 2 Comments

As some of my readers may have noticed, I have not been around much lately. The reasons being multifaceted, but center around a couple key factors; I’ve returned to Colorado, a place I love; I’ve gotten out of my funk of the past couple years; and lastly I starting working for a company that proves renewable energy is not just a figment of future promise, but is competitive currently and actually works, and the last two months I’ve been working my ass off towards bringing renewable energy into actual people’s lives.

Wind Turbines on the north side of the Columbia River in Washington State.

Wind Turbines on the north side of the Columbia River in Washington State.

En route out of Oregon and my year long hiatus from my tree pruning business, I was in search of employment working on the giant Wind Turbines, but much to my dismay along my entire course through Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming & into Colorado, the only ones I saw were in Arlington, WY. Ironically, while moving my wife, to Colorado we saw many, many more. In Arlington, Oregon another large wind turbine project was being constructed. What is the roots of the name Arlington, windy as fuck?! :)

Giant Wind Turbines in Arlington, WY

Giant Wind Turbines in Arlington, OR

Shortly after arriving in Colorado, I was hired on by Next Generation Energy in Lafayette, Colorado. A short list of renewable energy projects we work on, with some details to follow, is solar thermal heating of domestic hot water (for bathing, laundry, cooking, etc.), homes tied into either forced air or radiant heat, grid tied solar electric systems and stand alone photovoltaic systems to power remote communication towers or “street” lights and small wind turbines in the range of two feet diameter blades up to 12 feet.

Now I think there is a huge misconception out in the world that solar energy conversion to human use is an instant gratification device that us Americans are so used to receiving, yet this is not the case when we look at the installation costs of converting the sun’s energy into something useful. The simple notion that you can’t get something from nothing is applicable in the renewable energy industry as well, but we need to think of it as an economic investment over time. If we can get over our instant gratification insistence & expectations which we are too accustomed to, then we can come to realize how every day the sun is giving us huge quantities of energy that is being wasted and converted into destructive end results.

Just think of the amount of solar radiation that is being “wasted” in our urban environments converted to heat as parking lots & asphalt roofs absorb heat in the day, that we fight with air conditioners and more power consumption, then releases it in the night making it impossible to sleep without have the AC cranking. By intercepting the sun’s rays that would be converted to heat in a form we either do not want or cannot use productively, we could cover our roofs with both photovoltaic cells tied to the grid to reduce our need for fossil fuel production during the days, then at night when electricity demands from industry lower, the power plants would supply the electricity, hence diminishing the needs for battery storage. Also on the roofs we could have thermal collectors, that efficiently capture the suns energy before it is wasted as heat we do not want or cannot use, store it tanks similar to a modern hot water heater and supply 80-90% of our domestic hot water needs when averaged over the year.

Most people do not think about how much energy they waste and subsequently pay for, as the power companies do not give rebates for hot water you heat but do not use, do they? Upwards of 30-40% of an average home owners energy bills are for the heating of domestic hot water and keeping it at the high temperature for use at any time. Convert that fact to reality, and much of those costs are paid for something you do not use and it is wasted. Most people have their water temperatures too high, just think of the last time you turned on only the hot water to take a shower. There is enough energy in most areas of the country from solar irradiance, where you could achieve 80% of your home heating & domestic hot water needs from the sun alone.

Street lights we manufactured & installed in Colorado with small wind turbines, a PV panel & batteries completely off the grid.

Street lights we manufactured & installed in Colorado with small wind turbines, a PV panel & batteries completely off the grid.

So let’s be realistic and return to the errant preconception of the prohibitive costs to solar power. If you could reduce your home heating & energy consumption through investing in a system that can convert the sun’s rays to something useful and save 80% of your energy costs through the year, why would you not do it? Oh right, it is too costly!

Oh contrare my good reader. You are thinking of it from the old preconceptions. It is an investment, and what is the biggest investment most average people know of? Their homes, yet they have this wrong idea that they could “invest” in remodeling their kitchen or adding a bedroom that would increase the homes value for resale. Well if the last couple months have shown anything, homes do historically go up in value, but what is the rate of return on a home when you factor in mortgages & interest rates, or a slumping economy? Now if we cannot be certain a home’s value will increase at a rate higher than that of interest charges on a mortgage, while at the same time we know for certain energy prices from fossil fuels will increase and we know what the cost of heating & powering your home from the sun can be calculated relatively simply, we can begin to see if we look at a solar system as an investment, just like we have been mislead to believe our homes are supposed to be, that the rate of return on a solar system is much greater than that of a home investment.

I’ll return in a future post with more details as to how exactly we can accomplish converting the sun’s energy (a free, unlimited resource) into something that is not only useful to us, but also cost effective and over the long term profitable.

Heading out on the road tomorrow!

July 27, 2008 · 3 Comments

Out from my $1000/mo rental house and the jail that it had become.  Out from the prison and weight on my shoulders of everything I own owning me.  I huge sigh of relief has passed over me now, and a dense cloud many years in the making is lifting from my thoughts and things in general are looking much better.  My business is closed, no more dealing with the stresses imposed from without and from within, no longer will I stress myself out being guilty I am not addressing every potential customer, every current customer, all my employees and all the bullshit that goes with running a business.  Sure I am not making the bank I once was, but when money is the only thing that makes one “happy” that is not happiness at all.

I head out on the road tomorrow, spending a couple days climbing in Smith Rock, then on to SLC and climbing in the Wasatch Mnts, then on to Colorado and maybe stop off in Red Rock country to clear the mind and reattach with my roots.  Life is looking much better, my brain is actually functioning clearly and although I really have no clear idea of what I will do in Colorado, or whether I will be “homesick” for Portland, everything is much better right now.  Time to see how things go, being out in the open air and living simply again.  There is nothing better!

Wow! A simple spoof, garners 100s of hits. Serious topics & thought is never viewed.

July 22, 2008 · 1 Comment

It is unbelievable that a simple spoof in an attempt for a reality check garners 100s of votes and doubles the hit counts of my more thought involved, sources and cited posts. I think I own the market on “Yellow Cake Found in Iraq?” as it continues to get hit after hit.

Truly unbelievable in and of itself, let alone how the raw materials for enriched uranium have digressed into a discussion of abortion. Somehow, as I commented in another “spoof” post, abortion is THE REASON why ‘we’ invaded Iraq. I myself have yet to be sold on this idea, but given the responses, ABORTION IS THE REASON WE INVADED IRAQ!

Who woulda thunk it?!

July 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So yellow cake is very popular among American internet users lately, i should have bought stock in Pillsbury before posting this popular subject. Iraq Yellow Cake. One week of hits on Yellow Cake in Iraq has generated more hits then on my previous most popular article that is several months old. I think from now on I will just tag everything Yellow Cake in Iraq. Odd to say the least….

Fox News Commissions McCain Characture of Truth

July 15, 2008 · 2 Comments

Well they could, but given the truth would be more damaging to McCain than the worst case scenario lies, why would they want to report the truth about McCain’s past.

I’m an not an artist, but maybe someone who is can come up with a little political satire on an equivalent nature for John McCain. I shall provide some fodder, however when it is “true” can it still be considered satire?

Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less!

The wind in the United States could produce more than 4.4 trillion kWh of electricity each year–more than one and one-half times the 2.7 trillion kWh of electricity consumed in the United States in 1990.

Whether you are religious and believe God created everything around you, or are science based in thinking, there is no debate as to the cost of WIND POWER: IT IS FREE FOR THE TAKING.

US Electrical Grid courtesy of Geni.org

US Electrical Grid courtesy of Geni.org

The US Electrical Grid is already in existence for bulk transportation of electricity from one part of the country to another and if people live there, there is a distribution (collection) network already in place servicing the vast majority of the nation. Therefore, minimal investment would be needed to connect Wind Turbines to the Electrical Grid and from the Grid to your Home.

So which do we prefer? This….

or the potential for a nuclear meltdown like at 3 Mile Island in the US…

3 Mile Island Nuclear Plant courtesy wikimedia.org

3 Mile Island Nuclear Plant courtesy wikimedia.org

Why can’t we be reasonable, when reasonable is the intelligent, safe & fiscally responsible manner in which to proceed?

A heavy push for the Nuclear option fails simple logic on several fronts if we are being told it will help with fuel costs.

*at present cars are not powered by electricity
*the Hydrogen Car is years if not decades away from everyday American’s use
*the entire fuel delivery infrastructure (the gas stations) would need to be reworked and billions would need to be invested to retrofit them with hydrogen fueling tanks & pumps
*The US has no comprehensive plan for dealing with Nuclear waste
*How can the same people that believe Nuclear Power is the “Solution”, yet still be against Nuclear Waste being shipped across the country in railroad cars through their neighborhoods?

I am not stringently opposed to Nuclear Power in the mix, but it does not solve our energy problems when it comes to high gas prices.

Although I am slightly skeptical of what ulterior motives there may be for “freeing up” natural gas, potentially for use in tar sands oil recovery, there is no doubt moving to 20% electricity production from Wind Power is a positive & good thing to do. We have everything to gain and very little to lose by moving in this direction.

Let’s stop the insanity, move forward in a positive direction and quit fighting each other!

Which do you prefer, a relatively silent, clean wind turbine in your backyard or any of these options; a Nuclear Power Plant, a train carrying nuclear waste through your town & by your children’s school, contaminated water from “cleaning” the coal in “Clean Coal” technology, oiled beaches when a tanker runs aground or your children dying in a war to protect “our oil interests” abroad?

This truly is a no brainer, think about it!

Evidence against “Bigger is Safer” vs “Economical [smaller] is Less Safe” False Logic

June 6, 2008 · Leave a Comment

In the debate over SUVs and larger vehicles being needed for “safety” over going smaller more economical, either for ecological or economical reasons, the data doesn’t match the “Status Quo” Conventional Wisdom pushed by many, including the “Global Warming Skeptics”. So let’s look at the “big” argument in favor of “Larger is Better”, and Semis versus Passenger Vehicles. [No this is not a male enhancement advertisement, heads out of the gutter please ;) ]

Maybe a “factor” in choosing safety over economy, should be respecting the semi in the first place. Cut one off, drive in it’s blind spots, drive like an idiot around one, be accepting of Newton’s Law when it plows into you.

If your[the] logic were true, then we should all be driving actual tanks, but then we would not be safe from each other, so then we should upgrade to (more…)

Phone: 605.334.3378

Phone: 406.254.9509

Phone: 787.303.2008

and then hear the denials that Hillary stands for something more than 20 seconds.

To get the question “What has Barack Obama done for this country?” implying Hillary has done what exactly herself?

That Joe Wilson & Valerie Plame support her because she is strong on defense, not that they fear a “Judas” reprisal for coming out against her…

That Hillary is not going to get out of the race….

That Hillary is not destroying the Party…

That Hillary was lied to about the war and only signed the authorization so that it could go to the UN so we could go get al-Queda, that in the same breath I was told was not in Iraq? huh? obviously.

That the country was fearful then and it was justified for Hillary to vote for the War authorization and yet to this day does not need to apologize for her vote….

Excuses that it is ok to censor the blog to manufacture consent….

Denials she went against her word in Michigan & Florida….

Denials that the excuse for her “winning” don’t change every day…

and she is not demom-izing anyone…

ahh, the excuses keep coming….

Humility, what history can teach Hillary Clinton

May 26, 2008 · 17 Comments

“Henny Penny, the sky is falling.”

Rumsfeld could teach all the Hillary supporters a thing or two. Don’t deny reality, then try and blame it on “one person stealing the same vase.” You will look the fool years later.

Who was it that cried the Media was to blame again?

Democrats.Senate.gov

Rumsfeld: “Henny Penny!” “I picked up a newspaper today and I couldn’t believe it. I read eight headlines that talked about chaos, violence, unrest. And it just was Henny Penny—“The sky is falling.” I’ve never seen anything like it! And here is a country that’s being liberated, here are people who are going from being repressed and held under the thumb of a vicious dictator, and they’re free. And all this newspaper could do, with eight or 10 headlines, they showed a man bleeding, a civilian, who they claimed we had shot—one thing after another. It’s just unbelievable how people can take that away from what is happening in that country!” [Defense Department Briefing, 4/11/03]

I would normally not use this man of little credibility to compare a Democrat to, but on 2 points it is justifiable based on Hillary Clinton’s choices this campaign. 1) Her claiming [paraphrased] John McCain was more qualified on day one, than was Barack Obama to be Commander in Chief.” 2) Her statements that Karl Rove, [you have got to be f***ing kidding me?!?!] claims “Hillary to be the strongest candidate against John McCain,” as an honest statement we should consider credible & without ulterior motives.

So Hillary takes a little flak and she claims “sexism”, boo-hoo, cry me a river. Was she crying during all the media bias in her favor [when she only had her little Bosnia-gate last a day or two]? No i don’t think so.

What Clinton & her supporters fail to realize is her vote to authorize Bush to go into Iraq, which coincidently was a pander to look strong on defense & military for future presidential ambitions, and Clinton’s complete disregard for making amens to the Democratic base & moderate Independents, by being humble and showing some remorse for her poor decision, IS the reason she did not wrap up this nomination months ago.

Who’s fault is this? Hillary Clinton’s, not the media’s.

The 2006 Mid-term Elections were overwhelming proof the American people required this apology from Hillary Clinton before they would consider voting for her.

The American people were looking for humility of their potential future President. Instead of showing her ability to accept criticism of her vote to go to war and humbly request the voters to forgive her for this poor choice, she decided to brush them all off and completely ignore their requests.

Instead, she decided to show her “human-ness” and “not tough-as-nails” personality shedding some tears at a press conference. Both were political calculations on her part that backfired and because she chose to do them, it is the media’s fault for calling her out based on what the American people wanted and she refused to listen to?

Here is reality resulting from her participation in authorizing the War in Iraq. “VA confirms 18 vets commit suicide every day,” yet still to this day nothing out of Hillary Rodman Clinton, who claims she will fight for the American people.

You don’t know the disbelief I felt first seeing Joe Wilson & Valerie Plame endorsing HRC, given Valerie’s life was put in jeopardy when she was outed, plus countless others we will never know and everything they did was to try to stop the invasion. Yet, I understand where they come from, fearing more reprisals being tied to the Clinton’s for many years, as the “Judas” comments of Gov. Richardson demonstrated the Clinton’s complete lack of humility in honest defeat.

Cry a river, claim “sexism” while at the same time announcing “[I] you will only vote for Hillary” as you feel entitled to have a woman President irregardless if she has made very poor decisions, ignored the will of the Party base and cannot even run a $100 million campaign in the black and we are supposed to believe she can balance the budget once again and take this country out of the perilous economic road we travel?

“Hillary is Best” supporters are oblivious to the reality of what people really want.

* They want a President that is humble & accepts responsibility for past mistakes.

* They want a President that is honest & not willing to pander to get votes.

* They want a President actually willing to stick up for their own, not drink “shots & beer” to show he [she] will support the common man.

* They want a President that can manage their finances, given they will be looking over the largest economy on the planet.

* They want a President willing to stick to their guns, and not change at a whim for their own personal interest.

* They want a President that will stand up and tell it as it is when fallacies are spread, not leave it out there for doubt and fear to be propagated.

* They want a President to be of highest moral character with integrity.

* They want a President that values discussion, intelligence of the people [not making college degree and higher education a four-letter word], & the recognition that people want change, not the same old status quo.

* They want a President who does not value “spin” over honest discussion of the tough issues that confront us all.

Humility, sadly is what lacks the most within Hillary Rodham Clinton, her advocates and too many of her supporters.

And also, open up your comments or are you just censoring [allowing] for what you want to hear instead of what is really being said? Closing down your comments, censoring those that do not agree with what you say, then claiming you are the victims? See “Hillary’s trouncing in Red-Rascist Kentucky Matters?!” for but one of many censoring of comments by blogs such as “The Confluence,” “LadyBoomerNYC” & “Semidi” and now “Donna Darko” moderates & closes comments to ensure they support HRC 100%.

Hillary moves goalposts on “Green Coal” now too?

May 25, 2008 · 8 Comments

Valentine Bonnaire
“Obama vs Hillary Clinton on COAL, who is greener? Al Gore please help Hillary…”
May 25, 2008

You know, I can’t understand how Obama is so backwards in his thinking. He’s already shown us that he is pro-nuke, but now he’s also “pro-coal” — “Clean Kentucky Coal” to be exact. Well, Grist will fill you in on the fact that there IS NO SUCH THING AS CLEAN KENTUCKY COAL.

*cough*

Salon.com
Aug. 20, 2007

But many enviros aren’t convinced that Clinton is at the head of the class on green issues, noting that she supports “clean coal” and, like nearly

Grist on Hillary Plan

# Has advocated for a summer “gas-tax holiday” to ease consumer prices at the pump. The proposal would suspend the 18-cent federal gasoline tax and 24-cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day, to be paid for by a tax on oil-company profits.

# Supports coal-to-liquid fuels if they emit 20 percent less carbon over their lifecycle than conventional fuels. On June 19, 2007, voted in favor of an amendment that would provide loans for coal projects, including liquefied coal; the amendment did not pass.

No she doesn’t support “Green Coal” she just supports converting coal to “Liquefied Coal”

Where does this coal come from again?

SolveClimate.com says

So where is the political courage and leadership of this aspiring president on the coal question?

Listen to how she frames it — all wrong:

Well coal fits in very importantly, um, because obviously we have a great reserve of coal and we get more than 50% of our electricity from coal. The challenge is, how we’re going to continue using coal and uh, meet a lot of our environmental challenges.

No, Senator Clinton, the challenge is, how are we going to stop using coal.

It’s gets worse.

….and what I have said is that we’ll have a new cap and trade system and we’ll take a lot of money that we’ll get from that cap and trade system and invest it in new forms of energy including clean coal technology.

Currently, the Lieberman-Warner bill gives away for free to poluters hundreds of billions of dollars worth of carbon credits. You’d think that windfall would be enough for the coal industry to go away and see if they couldn’t develop clean coal on their own.

Right away I have been advocating that we fund 10 large scale carbon capture and storage projects that will utilize a range of coal types and power plant types and storage locations because it’s imperative that we do everything we can to get to a technology that enables us to use clean coal.

There’s no such thing as “clean” coal. And what you advocate is something that was published in a MIT report last year, but you leave out an important detail. It will take until 2030 to bring carbon capture and sequestration technology to commercial scale. Both DOE timelines and a leading global energy consulting firm agree on this.

….that supports, you know, the subsidies for coal-to-liquids projects that meet that environmental standard that I think we can set and I’m excited because if we started on it today we have some answers soon

Coal-to liquids? Representative Waxman is working hard to stop further use of coal-to-liquid fuels as they pollute substantially more than the fuels they replace. It’s fuel that was developed and used by the isolated Nazi regime during World War II, fuel that Al Gore has said is what junkies will turn to when they run out of the cleaner stuff.

So now Hillary supports Nazi technology? What is next, slave labor camps turning “people mills” to generate electricity?

That was a bad joke and idea, but given your initial article was completely skewed and far from accurate of HRC’s position I figured you deserved it. :)

I guess you didn’t get the memo, Hillary Clinton is finished. If she doesn’t stop while she’s behind, her next occupation is gonna be deep in the coal mines of West Virginia where all of her supporters are.

btw: seeing as though you didn’t write this article on paper, what powered your computer and the internet to publish your thoughts? More likely than not coal.

My non-partisan ideas on “Green Coal” and how it doesn’t exist.

The Sandia National Laboratory show this is how we get “Cleaner” Coal, but fail to mention the how Step 2 is far from clean. You can find out more about this below….

There is no “clean, green” coal contrary the media barrage to which we are witness lately. All those willing to swallow “Green Coal” propaganda are encouraged to watch this Sundance Channel documentary about coal mining in West Virginia.

Republican Strategy to White House: Propogation of Stupidity, Make Ignorant Dumber

May 24, 2008 · 3 Comments

How to disprove an idiot the easy way done simply. No longer waste your time responding to those who have an agenda of keeping people stupid so they may gain. Cut and paste, save your time for better, more worthwhile battles to fight.

Demonstration of Stupidity:
Posting 2 week old stumble of “57″ States by Barack Obama as de facto proof of his inability to be President of the United States of America
[insert insignificant event upsetting fundamental tenants of reality here]

Excuse/Reason Given:
“I am a weekend blogger”
[insert who writer is here, i.e., white man not hating on black, black woman who cannot be racist or sexist either, BibleThumper unable to get over "Marriage" being a word, etc.]
[Translation:I have too much to lose to defend Democracy so I will trash it]

Because you are a weekend blogger [insert excuse for being an idiot here], that excuses you to post as “significant” a stumble of words as something of importance[insert any tripe not worthy of discussion] as to why a candidate is not viable? any idiot and most likely 70% of the world knows we have 50 states, so what is your point other than spreading stupidity and points back to the poster of the stupidity.

What do you gain by posting drivel, not even worthy of going on the same page as “Brittney’s next trip to rehab,” other than to give ignorant people, unable or unwilling to think for themselves something to “latch” onto like “God & Guns” as a reason to not even consider a candidates position and just do as they are told?

Where do you move the discourse forward, to understand what each candidate stands for, by posting BS that does not matter? You don’t and that is exactly your point of posting it, b/c you know people like yourself would rather idolize ideology instead of observing reality.

Does undeterred, unwavering support of Ideology put food on the table? Lets just look at Ohio, for example the “God & Guns” comment. Is their vote for GWB & Republicans over the past elections based on ideology & religious dogma, in their best interest? They continually vote for “god & guns” over “food & work,” then want people to feel sorry for them as factories close and jobs disappear, not to mention their population that is smart enough to leave this lunacy. This is not media “buzzwords” or “Obama-mania,” this is reality and these people you cater to with your garbage, instead of talking to them like humans, who need to realize their action[s] or lack thereof is directly related to the position they find themselves in, you keep them stupid and beat them down for your own selfish purposes.

Don’t lecture me, with your carbon copy statements of what I would say, when you don’t mean it and you know it. You support stupidity for the people so you may gain [something] by taking advantage of this. What is it you have to gain by selling ignorance-making sure people keep buying things they don’t really need, put themselves further into debt, etc., given your position in radio [anything that depends on ignorance to generate profit]?

Conservatismis a term used to describe political philosophies that favor tradition and gradual change… also known as “maintaining status quo”…stay the same.

Republican Mantra is deeply rooted to Conservatism, “anchored to it,” and I can guarantee we agree on this point. Therefore, to maintain Republican power and the Conservative Ideology Symbiosys, it requires no changes be made, to maintain the same, preserve the Status Quo. Republicans require status quo and without they will perish, regardless of whether the current situation is good or bad, it must be maintained “as is” over all else. In the Republican Ideology a slow, gradual change in the negative direction is infinitely more important than a rapid change for the positive. This is the inherent downfall to the Republican Conservatism* Ideology.

Democracy is about discourse of the issues that effect all people in the democracy, not dumbing them down so those at the top can control them easier.

So what was it you were saying again? You posted this [any drivel of insignificance] because it was intellectually stimulating and “Obama not knowing the US has 50 states” will result in a family not able to feed their kids in Ohio because the factory left town? Or was it that God & Church will be forced out of Government & State were it does not belong, but is intertwined** with sayings & realities of “The Bible Belt” voting block or “The Compassionate Conservative” government party?

Honestly, the true question is “What do you have to gain?” from the position you lobby and and the status quo of “stupidity” you advocate?

* author’s note: Conservatism should not be in any way shape or form be misconstrued to mean “fiscal conservancy” as they are not the same.

** author’s note:I believe in separation of Church & State to ensure the safety & stability of both. My position is the same as The Reverend C. Welton Gaddy, Leader of the The Interfaith Alliance and The Interfaith Alliance Foundation, whom I quote from The Washington Post on April 9th, 2008,

“No candidate should seek, celebrate, or even accept endorsements from religious leaders.

For the sanctity of religion and the integrity of our democracy, religious leaders should avoid entangling houses of worship with partisan politics. Clergy must be free to speak about important issues of the day, and they should provide moral guidance to their congregations, but they lose credibility when they tie themselves to specific candidates.”
